Masquerade!

Some of my favourite Halloween looks are masks because there are so many endless possibilities for your designs! I hope you enjoy this how-to on my teal mask inspired by the peacock feather!

1 Use a glue stick to block out your brows. Take your time and make sure the hairs lay flat.
2 Apply foundation all over and concealer in areas of concern before setting with a translucent powder. Alternate layers of concealer and powder until you have fully covered the colour of your brows.
3 Buff a matte pink blush onto the apples of the cheeks. I chose matte because the mask will have lots of iridescence and sparkle and I wanted a balanced look.
4 Use a white eyeliner pencil to map out the shape of your mask and then fill it in with a green face paint or cream product to enhance the colour of the shadows you place on top.
5 Shade around the edges of the mask with a black eyeshadow. You can use a powder similar to your skin tone to help blend the colour.
6 Fill in your mask with a medium toned green shadow, shade the outer edges with a dark green, and highlight the centre points with a light green for lots of dimension.
7 Use eyelash adhesive to glue down your peacock feather and hide the seam with a jewel. Glue rhinestones around the edges of your mask in complimentary colours as a border.
8 Pat an eyeshadow primer all over the lid before applying a medium toned green shadow from lash line to crease. Blend a dark green eyeshadow on the outer corners of the upper and lower lash line and a light green eyeshadow on the inner corners.
9 Line the inner rim of the eye with a black eyeliner pencil and lightly coat your lashes with mascara before applying flasies. To apply false lashes rim the spine of the lash with glue and wait 30-40 seconds before placing the lash in the centre of the eye and then tucking in your inner and outer corners.
10 Pink shades really compliment greens so finish your look with a sheer pink lip gloss!

Retro 60's Look

I recently did someones makeup who requested a modernized 60's look. She used bright colours but I really love the traditional black and white. This has always been my favourite makeup era to recreate because it's such a bold look, and it's really when face painting and riskier makeup really started to take off!

1 Apply foundation all over, concealer in area's of concern, and set with a mattifying translucent powder. Pay special attention to highlighting under the eyes with concealer.
2 Sweep your light pink blush from the apples of the cheeks back and up to the temple. I used a matte blush because this was common of the 60's but you can use shimmery blushes as well.
3 Pat your eyeshadow primer all over the lid, and sweep your nude eyeshadow all over from lashline to brow bone.
4 Map out the general shape of your crease with your grey eyeshadow and an angled brush. Take your time lightly making your guidline.
5 Take a pointed blending brush and apply your grey shadow to the crease in windshield wiper motions. Slowly build the colour by blending your edge then adding more. (I love Stila's Eyeshadow Brush #30 for doing this).
6 Take your black shadow and angled brush and deepen the crease colour slightly.
7 With a gel or liquid liner trace along the upper lashline and create a flick that meets up with your grey crease shadow.
8 Run a white pencil liner all along the waterline (inside) of the eye and onto the inner corner of the eye. Blend a bit of the liner under the brow as well.
9 With your angled brush run your grey shadow along the lower lashline and apply mascara to the top and bottom lashes.
10 Apply a thin strip of glue to your lashes and wait 30 seconds (for the glue to get tacky) before applying your lashes. I apply my lashes with tweezers by placing the lash in the middle, and then tucking in the sides.
11 Finish by lightly smoothing concealer over the lips, and then adding a nude lipstick, lipgloss, or both!

Getting the correct positioning and angle of the crease colour can be tricky with this look which is why I suggest lightly mapping out a guidline with your angled brush before going ahead and really defining the line. Work slowly to avoid mistakes.
This is a fun look that can be adapted to suite a more wearable, everyday makeup.

Dramatic Smokey Eye

Here's a sexy look for a night on the town! A perfect combo with that little black dress. (Feel free to tone down the makeup and adjust it to suit your own style).

1 After applying foundation all over, and concealer in area's you need it (under the eyes, around the nose, on any blemishes), lightly dust on your setting powder to mattify and ensure a long lasting makeup.

2 Lightly sweep your bronzer across the back of the cheeks, temples, and hairline. Focus on the hollows of your cheeks to further sculpt your cheekbones.

3 Apply your blush lightly to the apples of the cheeks. When doing such a dramatic eye, it's important to keep the rest of the makeup neutral, so choose a natural blush tone.

4 After applying your eyeshadow primer, sweep your pink champaign colour from lashline to crease, and in the inner corner of the eye.

5 Apply your black eyeshadow directly into the crease of the eye. Start blending the outside edge all around the black shadow up and out, pulling the shadow gently into a more cat like shape. Blending is always easer with a clean brush, so if you can, have several  blending brushes on hand (especially for dramatic looks).

6 Next, blend your highlight colour directly under the brow. Not only will this highlight your brow bone, it will help blend the edge of the black shadow even more.

7 With an eyeliner brush, trace a thin line of gel liner all the way along your upper lashline, going slightly thicker towards the outer corner.

8 Apply a pencil eyeliner all along the inside of the eye and lightly drag it under the lower lashes. Remember to line the top and bottom of the waterline! Lining the inside of your upper lashes is called tightlining... this is especially important when doing such a dark look because you don't want any light areas showing. I always use a waterproof eyeliner pencil to ensure it stays on as long as possible. If you don't have sensitive eyes, try gently pressing a black eyeshadow ontop of the liner on your waterline. It will really lock in the colour.

9 Smudge the liner on the lower lashline and blend black eyeshadow over top of it.

10 Apply mascara lightly on the top lashes, and liberally on the bottom lashes.

11 Apply glue to your false lashes and wait 30 seconds before applying the lash to let the glue get tacky. I use tweezers to apply my false lashes and I find it makes the application a lot easier! Falsies are key with this look because your real lashes tend to get lost behind all the dark shadow.

12 And FINALLY, keep it simple with a light, neutral pink gloss and voila! A sexy smokey cat eye your guaranteed to get loads of compliments on!

Dark eyeshadows tend to have a alot of fall out and can be really hard to clean up after your look is done. To avoid this problem, you may want to do your eyes first and leave your foundation for last!

The key to being successful with this look is to take your time. It's an intense look that really needs soft blended edges, and sometimes blending can be frustrating and tedious. It's also a makeup that may not look very nice in the beginning stages... stick with it and really take your time!
